We partnered with one of the nation’s largest public transit providers to implement a companywide digital transformation — including redesigning and redeveloping NJTRANSIT.com, which serves nearly one million riders daily.
Massive Transformation, Minimal Disruption
Because NJ TRANSIT provides a critical service to its passengers, our approach was to work in partnership with the client’s established system. Rather than make sweeping changes that could potentially disrupt the user experience, we worked to continually clarify and improve the methods by which users received information.
During the discovery process, we conducted interviews with all stakeholders, internal and external, developing an ambitious roadmap and implementation plan to transition the website to a new, modern structure.
The Proven project manager utilized agile methodologies to seamlessly guide the project from discovery to launch, incorporating thorough QA and UAT steps to increase accessibility even for edge case use scenarios.
Future-Proof Infrastructure
To improve website performance and security, we developed a multi-layered architecture in which the CMS layer was separated from the front-end [client] layer. This architecture interacted with two different APIs and was designed to accommodate redundant AWS containers sitting behind a Fastly CDN, allowing for true load balancing while providing global POPs to serve the content efficiently. A Web Application Firewall was also established, keeping the entire web infrastructure secure.
Accessible Design
Our team created a design system to complement the technical solutions and to inform future page creation. This system equips the NJ TRANSIT team with the necessary tools to build upon our solution — long after the initial project completion — and ensures that the result will be cohesive and on-brand. Accessibility was paramount, with solutions designed for ADA compliance.
Improved Site Speed and Performance
NJ TRANSIT’s digital transformation delivers positive, measurable results that improve the online experience for users. A performance report for the redesigned NJ TRANSIT website demonstrated that our improvements have achieved an “A” (92%) PageSpeed Score compared to “C” (78%) for the legacy site.
